Grief Support in School for Grades K-12
For those of you that have students or work with students in grades K-12, the GIF (Grief Information Form) can be used to support your grieving student(s) in school. The GIF provides your child's teachers with information to let them know that they have a grieving student in their class. Your child's teachers will then be informed and therefore more likely to be sensitive around dates that may be challenging such as the anniversary of a loved ones death, holidays, birthdays, or even unpredictable grief surges.
After the parent/caregiver returns the completed and signed form to the school counselor/social worker, the responsibility will be with that individual to distribute it to the student's teachers at the start of each school year. Because grief is an ongoing journey you may find it helpful for your child's teachers to know about the death of their parent and/or sibling now and years from now. It can also assist you through transitions such as changing schools, moving, going from middle to high school, etc.
The GIF is currently being distributed to schools in Illinois.
